Chapter Thirteen

I’d given up screaming.

My throat was red raw, and even when I tried, only a pathetic half-whisper came out. I’d banged on the inside walls of the van until I was certain the sides of my fists were black and blue, and my shoulder muscles cramped from exertion.

I ended up huddled in the corner of the van to try to stop myself being thrown around every time we turned. I’d already hit my head and shoulder, and I didn’t want to risk any more injuries. I had no idea what my father planned to do with me, but I wanted to be able to fight, and breaking an arm or a leg would put me at an even worse disadvantage than I currently was.

Hayden must have made it back to the car by now and discovered me gone. Did he think I’d run? I blinked back tears at the possibility of him believing I’d deserted him. I hadn’t given him any reason to trust me, and now this felt like a classic case of crying wolf. If he thought I’d run, would he come looking for me, or would he let me go? And if that was what he believed, there would be no chance he’d look for me in the same place as my father. An even worse thought filled my head. What if he somehow learned I was with my father and thought I’d gone with him by choice? Would Hayden think I’d left him in favor of the man who’d murdered his mother?

My eyes filled with fresh tears at the thought of what he was going through. Hayden and I had had a turbulent time together, but I’d never have wanted him to think that of me. If I died at my father’s hands, he may never know the truth.

I hoped the presence of the police car would give Hayden some idea of what had happened. Though if someone else found the possibly dead cop before Hayden got back, he might not even get close enough to find out.

As we’d driven through the city, I’d been surrounded by the noises of other cars, sirens, alarms, even the underlying roar of the helicopters that had been circling the city ever since my father’s escape, but now I noticed the sounds of the city had grown quieter. Surely, we couldn’t have left? The cops would have blockades on all the major roads heading in and out of the city, but I guessed they wouldn’t have the manpower to cover them all.

The van jolted from side to side and then stopped.

I froze, my heart pounding, my mouth dry, waiting for his next move. The driver’s door slammed shut, and I jumped. Then I heard the rattle of what sounded like a shutter being rolled up, and then the van jolted with movement and the door slammed shut again.

We got moving, but only for a moment before drawing to a halt once more. The engine switched off, plunging me into a silence filled with terrified anticipation.
